  1. Do you have the right size tyres with the correct profiles?
  2. Does the throttle body need cleaning? I know that I had similar problems on a VW some years back which was solved by just cleaning with a throttle body spray. I have similar problems with a fairly new Honda lawn mower which has a surging problem with idle speed unless I spray the throttle entry with cleaner every year. H
  3. I've done the change and the rattle seems to have gone. Parts cost £102. I was surprised as the bushes looked OK and so did the ball joints on the drop arms. They were nowhere near being unsafe. However, even small movement would be heard from these parts. I was concerned that the set screws holding the bush mounts to the alloy suspension mounts would have seized, but they were OK and came out easily. Thanks for your help. H
  4. I had a mild rear clunking recently from the back of my C2 996 (2003) 54K. It was suggested on this forum that it could be rear sway bar mounts and drop arms, but these all seemed tight. Anyway I replaced them at a cost of £102 and things now seem OK. The drop arms are fairly slight with a small ball joint at each end. The changeover was an easy job with the back of the car on stands. Just make sure that the set screws into the aluminium sub frame are not seized up as if they shear off it could turn into an expensive job. H
  5. This is a pic of my 996 2003 oil filler tube in the winter after short journeys on cold days. In summer or after long drives there is hardly any muck. I normally clean this out. When I first saw this after buying the car I was horrified. I checked for leaks, changed the oil and whatever, but now know it's fairly normal for these engines. H
  6. It's useful to carry a spare and a photograph of its route around the pulleys.
  7. 996 Carrera C2 2003 Model 55k miles I know this is an almost impossible question to answer, but I am looking for some pointers. I have a rattle that seems to becoming from the suspension area and not the engine bay. It is definitely not from inside. It only occurs after I have driven the car for about 10/20 miles. I suspect either slack brake pads or shock absorbers in some way. It is more noticeable on uneven surfaces. I cannot find anything obvious that might be the source. Do shock absorbers get noisy after a few miles if they are worn? Thanks for "listening" H D
  8. I did the same job for the CD storage. A shelf is much more use and the changer comes out very easily
  9. In between fuelling events do the following: Open the fuel cap and poke something (piece of tubing) into the filler hole to open the flap. Take it out and close the cap. See if this procedure replicates the problem. If it does, it might help with isolating the problem. Am I right in thinking that these cars will not start if the fuel cap or the internal flap is open? H
  10. My first call would be to check to see if all the wheel nuts are tight. A slack wheel can cause knocking under braking.
  11. If it is being caused by a braking fault a vehicle pulls to the right if the right hand brakes are stronger than the left hand brakes. It could be a stuck caliper on the left side or a stuck piston.
  12. I had a similar problem with the fog light. I was getting a reading with a multimeter but the bulb would not illuminate. I tracked it down to a corroded connector in the multiplug. There was enough current passing to give a reading but not enough to light the 21w bulb. I used contact cleaner on the connectors and now it's OK. H
  13. Before I take the battery out of my 996 I connect a fused backup 12v supply to the jump start points in the engine compartment. It saves having to worry about re-setting anything when the main battery is replaced. H
  14. The belt is easy to replace. If you don't want to change it now, just buy one and carry it with you. Also take a photograph of the belt on the car, so if it fails you know how to re-thread it.
  15. On all my cars I replace the brake fluid every two years.
  16. Try the wheel nuts first - it will not take a minute with a wheel brace. Even one slack wheel can cause a lot of noise.
  17. The 274 seems odd, sure it's not 275. Your back tyres have a different rolling circumference from the front tyres. The second figure is the aspect ratio. It measures the height of the tyre off the rim as a percentage of the width. The "45" tyres are bigger and therefore these wheels turn slightly more slowly than the wheels with the "40" tyres for any given speed. If this difference exceeds a certain tolerance the ABS senses something is amiss. I don't know what that tolerance is. Having said all that it, could be a slack wheel nut as that can cause knocking noises also. H
  18. Just got my copy and its excellent and worth waiting for. Great value for money and essential reading for the 996/997 owner.
  19. Just a warning. Do not disconnect the battery when the engine is running. If you do this the alternator output could damage the other electrical components in the vehicle. The battery provides resistance in the circuit and if it disconnected when the car is running alternator voltage could spike.

  21. These cars take about 8 litres of oil. With my 996 I never fill it. It has a sump and filter capacity of 8.3 litres and when I change the oil and filter I put in just 8 litres. The oil level is one bar down and I am happy. I also check the dipstick (not on 997) and when it says halfway I am also happy. However, the electronic reader produces variable results. Sometimes it says full and sometimes it says one bar down. When mine says 2/3 bars down I put in some oil. However, It hardly uses any oil between changes. Don't worry so much, but if I had just an electronic reader I might also worry. H
  22. Am I right in thinking you have a car first registered in 2003 and an engine that dates from 2004? I wonder when that was fitted? Might have been a replacement under warranty. My original engine was 663 (2003 car) and the replacement is 665 (2005 engine).
