I have a 1999 Carrera Coupe 6 spd.. Its the second time my crank has failed the first time we were able to replace the bearings. This time it was actually cheaper to just replace the engine. I got a good deal on a 2000 engine. My question is is this a straight swap? I noticed the Throttle Body is drive by wire on 2000 Mine is cable. Do i just replace that part with my old one? Computer updates? Anything else I should know when going from a 1999 to a 2000 engine? The 2000 engine is a complete engine with all accessories. Thanks in advance.

Not meaning to hi-jack your thread, but....

Is there a way to tell if a MY99 996 has had an engine replaced by looking at the car rather than trying to find out via a dealer? A friend wants to buy one and is stressed about engine failure. Reads too many forums.

curious... what where the symptoms of a failed crank and "bearing failure"... did you hear a tapping noise as the bearings wore out? I have a tapping noise and we think it is bearing failure as well... would like to compare notes with you...

I'm not certain but I believe refurbed engines have an additional letter and the end of the serial #

Engine which were reconditioned by Porsche lack cosmoline but are also identifiable by "AT" in the engine serial number. If I remember right an engine which was reconditioned would have a serial number starting with M96/01AT then be followed by the production number.

PTEC remembers correctly, including the sequence. AT means "Austauschmotor"

I am in Houston, TX

Cause of my 99 996 C2 failure unknown.

Coolant in oil, and vice versa. Low coolant warning light only symptom!

Significantly bummed!!!

Car is at indy shop for a while, no diagnosis yet.

From my reading coolant in oil = death/engine replacement.

No warranty, so I may have to start delivering pizza for a decade to buy new engine!

Sorry to hear about your woes. Who is working on your car now?

I am in the Woodlands and may be able to help. In any case we are putting the engine back in my 2000 996 C2 this Sat., so if you want to come and take a look, you're more than welcome. PM me for details if you like.

Depending on the condition of your engine I might be interested to buy it, as I am planning to do a rebuild myself.

Don't get too bummed yet. I saw somebody post a Boxster rebuild the other day that started with coolant/oil mix, and it turned out just to be a missing freeze plug in the head due to overheating caused by the water pump failing. It's still a significant teardown, but not a death sentence.

You might want to contact these guys for some pointers on properly diagnosing your issues:

This article also provides good insight (although it is long and maybe a little too detailed for my taste): http://www.autofarm.co.uk/pdf/911PW_Apr06.pdf

Good luck and keep me posted. I am on Memorial & Sheppard.
