Grinding sound at start up?

Recommended Posts

HI all I'm new Porsche owner. I just bought a nice 1999 boxster w/ 60k on it. This car is awsome to drive and worth the money. I also drive bmw and benz but this boxster is so much more fun to drive. So heres some problem i'm hearing after 1 week of drving it, well actually it only makes this griding or squeeching noise during start up then goes away in like 3 sec? It sounds like an overtighten belt? any ideas what that could be? Thanks in advance!

Will:

Remove the engine access panel behind the seats and inspect the serpentine belt and the pulleys.

Do a search here and you will find DIY for removing the serpentine belt, with photos, as that will allow you to inspect the individual pulleys for wear.

If its blood curtlling and an on/of sort of thing, It may be a thing called a bendix in your starter. Usually starts its screech right after the the car kicks over and stops abruptly after a second or so.

Agree with pk2....Sounds like your starter to me. My 996 did the same thing and it was the starter. But 3 seconds sounds like a long time....

My bad not 3 sec but more like 1 sec which really annoying! lol I will look at it tommorow oh btw how much the starter cost? ( just lazy to google it) Thanks

+1 on the starter if it's only one second.

If it is the starter bendix then all you need to do is take it out and wash the working bits down with petrol - blow it dry or simply leave it to dry then refit.

What happens is dust and oily residue gathers on the starter shaft - this gets quite thick like grease and causes the pinion to stick when the solenoid tries to disengage, some make the mistake of lubricating - and this does ease the problem for a short time - but lubricant attracts dust - which in turn brings the problem back.

Thanks guys I will look at those when I have a time . I have more pages to learn about my boxster..hehehe

Mine did the same and it was the Serpentine belt pulleys idler pulleys. I replaced the bearings in them only as the complete pulley is about $50-$60. If you have a vise and some sockets they are very easy to replaced. Standard bearings available at any bearing supply, about $8.00 each.

As Glyn said lubing it may not be a good medium/long term solution: the solenoid/Bendix will may start sticking again when the grit adheres to it especially if its not started up that frequently.

It depends on the lube used.. Dry graphite that is used in locksets maybe be what you need. Doesn't attract dust, and stays when you rub it in with your fingers.

I have the "howling starter syndrome" also.. Just waiting for a day off to tackle it.

I have this same issue currently as well. I read a thread that had a good DIY on taking the starter apart and using white lightening grease (I think) to fix the starter of a VW, but it seems it has disappeared. I don't know much about the insides of a starter. Does anybody have any kind of link or instructions (detailed preferably) on what to do w/the starter once removed?

Any chance you meant "white lithium grease"?
