Updates to Fuel pump- do you have to replace both at the same time?

My left fuel (primary) pump went out on my 2004 Cayenne S, when I went to order the parts from www.sonnenporscheoemparts.com they said Porsche updated the fuel pumps and I would have to replace both because the old fittings will not fit to the new pumps. Is anyone aware of this update, have they installed a old fuel pump with a new one... or is it just best off to replace both at the same time anyway as if one goes out the other will be going soon also? Also I pulled fuse number 14 so I can drive with just the right fuel pump, does anyone know how long I can drive like this, parts wont come in for a few days. Thanks!

No but just got the Cayenne back with the new pumps and it runs much better. From everyone I talked to and what I read replace both pumps at the same time. Got the parts from Sonnen in Cali, labor done at The German Shoppe in Denver (awsome Indy).

I still haven't replaced the pumps but Im going to order the 2nd pump probably this week. Apparently you have to do both. Very irritating. Glad to hear your running better than before.

There is one extra hose on the old pump that isn't on the new pump that I ordered from Sonnen. It connects to the right pump and splits to connect to the right regulator. Im going to see if I can avoid changing both pumps and dropping another $350 into replacing a part that works fine.

I bought a set of these replacement pumps from eEuroparts. Even went so far as to verify that they are the correct ones. however as others have mentioned the hoses are different. Can someone tell me what hose coming off the pumps go where? I know I should marked the old lines in the car to match up to the new lines from the pump but I was expecting something different when I pulled them out of the tank. Does anyone have a routing diagram with the new pumps versus the old diagram with the old pumps by chance?

I did mine myself and it was not bad at all as long as you have minimal gas in the tank and a quality respirator and gloves. Made a huge difference. My gas tank literally has sand in the bottom and metal bits you can clearly see once almost all the gas is out. Makes you wonder.

Thats great. Do you remember what hose from the new pumps was routed to where? Does anyone have a diagram for the new pumps.

Why don't you guys buy the Touareg pumps? These are the same and a lot cheaper. I paid less then 200 for both pumps.
