Hi all, It seems there are some cases going around regarding 996's airbag warning lights and all possible causes. I thought I'd share my story in a new post, since I could not find a similar thread to post this on to as a reply. My car is a 996 Carrera 2 (model year 2000, EU model). My episode started during other maintenance work. I had left the key in the ignition while I had a battery booster on (Note: do not leave the key in the ignition when using a booster!). Apparently this caused a voltage spike, which broke my airbag control module (part # 996-618-219-00). After having my car hooked up to a PIWIS 2, I got the following fault codes: 3, voltage 195, control module internal fault 46, belt buckle driver 49, belt buckle passenger 23, belt tensioner driver 25, belt tensioner passenger 64, seat occupancy detection passenger 72 child seat detection I ended up ordering a pre-owned control module from a 2004 Boxster S (part # 996-618-219-02), as the parts were interchangeable between Boxster and Carrera according to a local specialist. (Note that there are two separate part numbers, depending on whether you have side airbags or not.) After swapping in the pre-owned module, I still got the following fault codes: 53, side airbag sensor, driver 56, side airbag sensor, passenger It turns out that both of the sidebag sensors (part # 996-618-221-00) had also perished due to the voltage spike. After swapping the original modules for a pair of pre-owned sidebag sensors (part # 996-618-221-01, again Boxster parts), my local mechanic was finally able to clear all fault codes. Note that the warning light will not go away by itself even after the problem has been resolved, you’ll have to clear the fault codes with a diagnostics tool first. I’ve read from elsewhere that a new control module needs to be locked in to the car, and that once the module is locked it cannot be unlocked. While the module indeed cannot be be unlocked, in my experience it is still possible to swap the module from another car. -
Hello everyone! I’ve run into some electrical problems on my '08 Turbo and I’m stumped.... I've looked through a lot of Renntech posts and don't see any thing close. First the panoramic roof and sunshade were opening and stopped about foot open. Maybe coincidence, it happened right when someone opened the door. I’ve checked practically every fuse even pulling the pano-roof control unit (back where the motors are located, and the circuit board looks okay. Then the instrument panel has started to act strange. The gear indicator shows that it is all gears at once, see the photo which is while it is in drive and moving. I can shut the car down and restart and the problem goes away. The time keeps changing randomly and the outside temperature is wrong. The button that opens the rear hatch that’s on the driver door has stopped working. Then my battery died, it was five years old so no surprise. After I replaced it the airbag indicator on the panel has lit up. I’ve tried to reset the instrument panel (Main Menu> Settings > Factory Reset) but it will not allow me to select “Reset”. I’ve also pulled the fuse several times to reset the panel but no change. Today, I’ve connected my iCarSoft POR II diagnostic tool to the car. The Airbag section says it “cannot connect to the ECU” so I can not reset the airbag light. There are YouTube videos of people using the tool on Cayenne’s (albeit on newer models) to reset it so I believe I can. The Panoramic roof says it does not have any DTC codes. The lift gate button on the driver door indicates it has appropriate voltage and no DTC codes. Also, no DTC codes for instrument panel, electrical system or DME I’m not sure this is related or not, I changed out the interior incandescent bulbs with LEDs. I now know that LED bulbs give off electromagnetic interference but seems remote. (as a side note, I found this out when I put LED bulbs on my garage door opener unit and it stopped receiving commands from the remotes – I had to get special bulbs from Amazon) Yesterday, I removed all the LEDs and went back to the old bulbs – no change. Any ideas, suggestions or guesses? Thanks, Mike FYI: The car is in Drive, "D" and is in motion.

Horn works depending on its mood. “ Please help Any suggestions would help. I’ve taken off the door panels and disconnected and reconnected the airbags. -
So only managed to see a black square of tape expertly placed over the Airbag light (ON all the time), only because of driving it in the sun with the top down. Been concentrating on other parts of the car. Any-who, that has lead to seeing that the Seatbelt light doesn't appear at all, and closely related, the horn didn't have a fuse in it at all. So this has brought up a question, the Codes reported, the electrical drawings (Bentley), ....while they say "passenger" or "driver" side, does this in fact relate to the left and right side of the car when it is the probably more common "left-hand drive"? Code 30 Ignition Circuit, side airbag passenger................is that actually the right side? This will not reset with the Durametric. I looked at the airbag connector in the left door, but now I am thinking it may actually relate to the other side of the car, i.e. LHD passenger Interestingly, the Airbag module wiring, Passenger Side Belt Lock, that wire is cut at the plug and a grafted in wire (plug connected) heads off under the dash somewhere (yet to be traced). So that Br/Bl wire say passenger, but maybe it relates to the right hand side of the car, in this case the drivers seat. BTW, the left seat, (passenger), does not have a wire at the buckle, but I think maybe the RHD ROW, or Australian RHD cars didn't have that anyway. Or has been replaced with the wrong buckle. So maybe the Airbag light was covered to avoid looking for a fault, might be a plug. Could it be related to the seat-belt buckle, again patched to avoid fixing it properly? The light doesn't even go with the self-test, so could be a bulb. I have read that the seat belt buckle may not be included in the Airbag ignition circuit for this region. Horn didn't have a fuse in it. Relay operates with the horn pad, but no horns, so maybe bad horns. The fuse may also have been removed if it had that bad horn pad issue and going off on its own. -
I had to disconnect the passenger side door airbag as part of door panel removal, to replace the door lock mechanism. To check that I replaced the part correctly, I reconnected the battery and turned the ignition key, and got an "Airbag Failure" warning. The fault didn't clear even after disconnecting the battery, reconnecting the airbag and closing up the door panel, and reconnecting the battery. I confirmed the airbag was reconnected. I suspect that it may be a "latched' fault that can only be cleared via the Durametric tool - thoughts? -
Had a metal water bottle rolling around under passenger seat. Got an airbag fault. Used durametric and saw it was implausible signal from AWS (fault in AWS module and airbag module). Took several tries but got those cleared (had to clear, turn key off, then on a couple of times). Now, however, I have a code which I cannot clear: 805A Passenger's front sensor no communication. So, i get the system fault message and the red exclamation point. The "passenger airbag" light stays UNLIT with no one in the seat...UNLESS I buckle the passenger seat belt, at which point it lights up (no one sitting in it) The only thing I haven't checked (will do shortly and update this thread) is to watch the sensor values in durametric for the AWS when I sit in the passenger seat to see if anything registers. But again, I no longer have an AWS code, just an airbag code...just not sure which sensor it's referring to (acceleration? weight sensor?) If anyone has hints, thoughts, experience, please let me know. Thanks! -
I had a new gremlin pop its head. Airbag fault message on my '04 S. Pulled the code with Durametric and code 1217 came up. Checked Renntech and wouldnt you know it this is a common issue with a TSB 9/04 6963. So I went to work following the TSB and its now gone. Steps Disconnect Negative battery cable Discounnect wiring harness connectors to seat (includes airbag yellow connectors) Unbolt/remove seatbelt harness Unbolt seat and remove Turn seat upside down Follow tsb and find the two wire connector black and blue wires Clip wires Solder blue to blue and Solder Black to black Shrinkwrap and zip tie back together Reverse and put seat back in Cayenne Link to TSB http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?app=downloads&module=display§ion=download&do=confirm_download&id=839 I forgot to take a picture so i attached the one I used for reference from a post at Pelican

Hello everyone, first of all, i would like to excuse my bad english, im from germany. My name is Dominic and i drive a Cayman S. I really love this car, but i hate the seats. I bought a pairs of "König" seats and im about to install them this weekend. The only problem is, no Dealer does the coding to dissable to dissable the thorax Airbags. So i need to add some resistors on the cables. Can somebody tell me where i have to wire the resistors? I found this topic with the same question, but no answer: Thank you very much in advance!!

Hey. I'm new to this forum and owner of a Cayenne turbo 2004., I have had the airbag yellow warning light on since I replace the battery. I didn't receive any error code. And I follow the previous post on this forum tried to use the PIWIS to erase the faulty memory, it didn't work though. And I also tried to disconnect the battery, but the light still on. I bought a Maxicheck(it's more direct and easy for me to use than PIWIS) to detected where is the problem which shows control module faulty 3 and belt tensioner, passager's side, rear 4BC. also the actual value shows almost everything is "too big". So my question right now is does it means my control unit need to be replaced? And if I replace it use the used parts do I still need to do the "locking steps"(I saw people talking about the airbag lock in other post). English is my second language hope I can get everything explain well. Thanks for your help.

Hey everyone, my name is Danny King I am the owner of P3 Autokrafte I Dayton Ohio. Is anyone on this forum familiar with K line and L line communication on the 993? In the shop we have a 1997 Cabriolet that was brought in for a horn support. Very common problem right? During the course of the repair I tested the horn with the airbag off just to verify function. Of course this set the airbag light which I knew would happen so I plugged in the PST 2 to clear it. To my surprise I could not communicate with the airbag module upon further investigation I found I could not communicate with any module in the car. Of course the car has Drive block and no matter what I do with Drive Blok it does not seem to matter I still cannot communicate. So I have no communication to DME,climate contro, abs, or airbag. At the OBD2 connector pen1 is voltage and pin 16 is voltage 10 four and five are ground and pin 7 is the K line pin 15 is the L line. Power and ground are present on the associated pins where it should be. Some wiring checks have been done on the K like and L line circuits and no problems have been detected yet we still have no communication. All I want to do is reset the airbag light. And the airbag module only has K line communication going to pin 9 of the airbag module. I have isolated the K line wire and substituted my own K line wire with a fabricated obd2 harness to allow me to bypass the car's wiring and go straight to the airbag module K line but still no communication. Other than pin 9 the rest of the vehicle harness is still plugged into the airbag module. If anyone here is familiar with scan tool communication requirements and K line communication requirements on a 993 please help. Thanks, Danny

Just figured i would share. Christmas Day heading down to see the parents i had a loud BANG come from the front left. sounded like i had a rock kick up under the car or something. Completely flat, fresh pavement, so no bumps of any kind around. Anyways i didn't see anything come out the back of the car and no warning lights so i figured i'd keep driving. Got to my parents, and as i'm pulling in i get a suspension warning. Weird, still same ride height so enjoyed the day with my family. Coming home, the car was at the loading height in the front. definitely sitting on the bump stops. Got a replacement from Germany through Miessler for 289 with the new o rings. A STEAL considering sunset wanted 1200. replacement is pretty easy. Something to keep in mind. take a look at the aluminum cover that split on me. Mine had cracks for a long time, but never really though anything of it. Enjoy!

Hello All, I got Air bag code 21, some posts say to replace the clock spring and some say to check the front left crash sensor. I don't have a spare clock spring laying around so I thought I'd start withe the crash sensor. Anyone have a photo or two or a good diagram on where I can find it? Believe the part number is 996.618.221.00. Thanks in advance! -
I have an ’00 996 C2. I recently removed the dash and most of the components down to the firewall to repair the AC baffles and install an new stereo and amps. Everything is working fine except the airbag light was is on. I bought a Durmetric cable to reset the system and after multiple resets I still get error codes 20, 26, 28 and 30. I am sure I missed or damaged something getting everything back together. Can anyone recommend a place to start looking based on these code? Alternatively can anyone recommend a place to find more information on these codes. -
My 2005 Boxster (987.1) Base has been triggering an airbag light since I bought it. My durametric shows the code to be 8024 "Driver's thorax airbag short circuit to ground". I can reset this fault code and it stays good for a while and them returns sometimes the same day and sometimes it may be a week but it always comes back with the same exact code. According to the TSB "Diagnostic Trouble Codes in Airbag Control Unit" found here under Boxster TSB's, this fault code is a ground fault or damaged driver's side backrest wiring harness and the solution is to replace the wiring harness. I can get the wiring harness for about $70. My question is, does anyone know how to replace this wiring harness or how difficult it is to replace? Is there a DIY for how to remove the driver's side seat and how to dismantle the seat to get at and replace the wiring harness? Any help would be appreciated. -
Not been on this site for years - just got back to Porsche ownership - 2011 Boxster S. Only done a few miles so far, but it looks and sounds great, especially compared with my diesel main car. The original owner ordered lots of options, but not everything I would prefer. So, I need to know if it's possible / easy / expensive to fit the following: 1) Ability to disable / enable the passenger airbag so a child seat can be fitted from time-to-time. Is it possible to fit an aftermarket switch? 2) The car has PCM 3 (with extended nav) but no bluetooth, aux or usb. Is there a way to upgrade PCM 3 or is it best to have an after market system fitted? (Odd that these were options when the actual components cost a few pence!) Thanks for your suggestions

Took my car in for regular service. Replaced belt and a new battery was installed. Tech noted that when they replaced the battery. They pulled the radio out to find the serial number to get the code for the radio. Since then I have noticed that when I make a sharp right turn or go over a bump the radio turns off, airbag and rollover light comes on including the lights on the door panels. When vechile is switched off the codes are gone until I run over a bump or right turn again. I think it is a lose connection somewhere but I can't figure it out. Tech said that it could be a glitch. I feel like smacking him over the head because I never had this issue. Any insights? -
Hi All, I have a 99 C4 which I purchased back in 2003. In 2005 the airbag light came on with error 21 – (ignition circuit driver). I changed the clock spring – 996 652 211 00 with the same part number and the problem was fixed. Last year, in November 2012, I got the same issue and purchased a clock spring contact unit – 996 652 211 01 (this number superseded the original part number above) and the issue was fixed again … for about a month! I figured it must have been a defective part and ordered a new one. The new part was installed in January and now, in March, I just got the same error 21 again. What am I doing wrong? There is only one way to connect and install the contact unit and I just can’t figure out what is going on. If replacing the contact unit wasn’t fixing the issue for a while, I would be looking for the problem elsewhere, but it is, so it must be it. Has anyone seen this before? Thank you, Ivo -
Hey guys, Got my Durametric in hand finally. Plugged in to my 99 C2 to diagnose my airbag light. All I get is "code 0" module failed to initialize. Am I missing some step to accessing the airbag unit? Can durametric not help me on my 99? Off to read some help files/the manual :) thoughts? thanks!

Are there any members in the Cleveland area with a Durametric that could help me reset an airbag light? I want to buy an Enthusiast, but am concerned that it may not reset this light on a 986. I have read posts of members who have had difficulty. Are there any indie shops in the Cleveland Area that will reset an airbag light without gouging? Thanks, Paul
