  1. I purchased a 1999 Porsche Boxster 986 about a year ago and I'm having a few problems with the electrical accessories. The top worked fine when I bought it, but now it won't work sometimes. The radio also turns on, then immediately off at startup, and it won' turn back on until a few minutes later either by itself, when I use turn signals, power windows, brake, or even just by itself. After the car is "warmed up", then it will stay on. Other things won't work right or not at all, such as the alarms for, ignition, door open, light switches, etc. The fuses are all fine, and I know the battery had been replaced right before I purchased it. I haven't checked the relay for the top, but I am about to do that now. I feel like there could be a single problem creating all these issues. Any help would be greatly helpful and appreciated!
  2. I committed the fatal sin with my Boxster and did not clean out the drains since this time last year and was punished by the drains clogging up and flooding the interior of the car. The result was a very wet body control unit, all the rear lights illuminated and once I got into the car it decided to start moving the roof on its own and broke the plastic ball ends off two of the roof (soft top) arms on the roof transmissions.... So, as I have a durametric, I decided to buy a new body control unit, and coded it up as best as I can and replaced both the arms with the plastic ball ends. Everything seems to be fine and working great, except for one, minor and confusing feature.. The clam shell at the back of the roof comes down properly when you put the roof down, but does not come down completely when you put the roof up! I have tried adjusting everything which can be adjusted, I have spent days going through the forums searching for a similar problem, and I have even taken the roof transmissions off and inspected them and figured out how they work. The transmissions run until they hit the two microswitches inside the transmissions, which also seem to be working properly Nothing seems bent, other than the ends of the rods going to the clamshell, which seem to be bent from the factory. On my old boxster (986) I once had a problem getting the roof to work properly and noticed on that on that car when the roof was all the way forward, a microswitch above the door pillar would be made and then the roof seemed to run for a couple more seconds to finish closing things and put everything under tension, on this 987 the motors stop the instant they hit the microswitches in the transmissions,,, Is this right? The other odd thing, the durametric seems to be able to code the rear control unit, and I can change coding and see the effects, but if I try to read or clear fault codes in the rear unit it just sits there forever trying to connect... Is this normal, or an indication of a seperate or connected fault? Occasionally the Gateway and other systems are reporting being unable to communicate with the rear control unit also... Which is odd.. How can I be coding it via its communication system, but not able to talk to it for fault codes? Anyway, I would have put up two problems here seperately (Clamshell not closing and communication errors) but thought it might be best to give you guys the full picture! ... HELP!!!
  3. Okay this is REALLY specific. The adjustable tension cable on the drivers side of my cabriolet disconnected at the top where it threads (8mm) into the top frame, not at the bottom where it snaps onto the ball. The is a larger diameter (10mm?) clean smooth painted hole where the cable needs to thread in, which leads to the presumption that there was a nut on the back side? Searched all over including removing driver's side rear 'door' panel and fishing around with a magnet but no loose nut found. Looks like getting to back side of this frame casting would entail a major disassembly of the cabriolet top frame? Also, what does this clip that goes over hydraulic cylinder do? Right side clips is in place about halfway down length of cylinder. Left side clip was down around the base of the shaft. Replacing it where there appears to be a shiny spot looks like it would interfere with the cabriolet top potentiometer arm. Right cable threaded into frame at top Right cable threaded into frame at top Missing cable location Smooth clean painted hole in top frame where 8mm cable end is supposed to thread in Left cable Left upper cable end with 8mm thread Clip question
  4. I just bought myself my first Porsche, a 1998 Boxster. I have an issue with the soft top that I'd like to get some guidance on. The top goes down smoothly with no issues. It also comes up smoothly until it is nearly all the way up. Just before the dashboard Top light goes out, there is a pretty sharp metallic twang or snap. It did this when I was looking at the car before purchase, and it did it again this evening when I put the top up after driving the car home. I'm assuming it's getting caught on something but I wonder if anyone might have suggestions on what to look at given the late point in the cycle where it occurs? Thanks! Dave
  5. Hey The convertible top on my '99 Boxster has been acting up for the past few years. Sometimes worked fine and other times wouldn't work at all. I had it looked at by my local shop and by my local Porsche service center. My local shop replaced the switch in the convertible top latch housing (a few years ago) and then the emergency break switch (a couple years ago). This didn't solve the problem. Then a couple of weeks ago the Porsche service center again replaced the emergency break switch, again not solving the problem. Over the past week or so the top had completely stopped working, but then this morning it was working again (intermittently). The tech at Porsche said that everything has been checked (relay, switches, etc.) so he suggests replacing the convertible top motor for approximately $2500. I'd appreciate insights from anyone that has been through this. I see quite a few posts re malfunctioning tops so any info will be helpful.
  6. So I noticed one of the velcro straps in my top broke from the top and is hanging from the metal bar, so I just took it off. Is this strap supposed to help guide the top under the plastic channel when closed or something else, because as you can see in the 2nd pic on the right, the top still closes correctly and tucks nicely under the channel even with the strap off. Just curious what that strap is for and if I really need to sew it back in place. Thanks.
  7. All of a sudden my top is not sitting flush with the body when the roof is open The light goes out indicating that the car thinks the top is all the way down. The clamshell goes down evenly, not askew. The front is aligned correctly, but the back of the clamshell just sits proud of the bodywork by maybe 1/2". Enough that it's visibly not fully closed when seen in my rear view mirror. I cycled the top up (works fine) and down (same problem). Had someone try to help it down that last little bit, to no avail. No unusual noise when operating the top Any thoughts on what's wrong and how to correct it. No recent work has been done on the top, but it is a milder version of what I saw when I had the immobilizer replaced (2 years ago for water intrusion) and the Porsche dealer failed to fit the top back on properly. Thanks, Carlos 2001 986S Tiptonic 100k miles
  8. Hello everyone, My convertible top broke in "fully up" position recently, with the clamshell at a 20 degree tilt. Was able to remove the clamshell by getting under it (painfully) and found a shredded motor cable going to the driver's side. I wanted to make sure that neither of the two transmissions were at fault, so I removed them to examine their gears. Carefully disassembling them, all the gears appear to be in good shape with no missing teeth, however, when using the old intact cable and using the power drill to rotate the cable, the circular interior that goes into the V-joint does not move at all when turning with the power drill. Does it only rotate when under pressure? I'm thinking I'm *almost* there and would like to avoid $200-$400 for new transmissions if not needed... Thanks in advance, Keith Rupp
  9. Car: 1999 Boxster stock "Radio Speaker Box" behind seats Putting the top down last night and heard a loud pop. Top will not go down and dash light is on. Checked the switch in the top latch and it is functioning. Nothing when I press the convertible button. I'm assuming an arm or cable broke. I searched the forums and found some help but my question is a bit more basic before I see what is broken - how do I get to the parts! Top is up, clamshell is down. Q: 1) Does the top need to be up or down ( or 1/2 way) to access parts? 2) If it needs to be down, how do I get it down? 3) When I installed new rear speakers in the speaker box, I needed the top 1/2 down to remove the box. 4) Anyway to open the clamshell manually? (I read about removing some "clips" but not sure where they are. All the pictures posted are close-ups...looking for something further back to understand how to access area. Thanks, Greg
  10. Hi everyone, My soft top was worn out and ready to be replaced. I recently had it done by a professional upholsterer. When I picked up the car, I didn't notice any wrinkle and since I had upgraded to glass window, I was happy to be able to see clearly in my rear view mirror. However I noticed a gap of about 1/3 inch between the top rubber and the windshield. I was told to wait for about 10 days before opening the top because new tops are really tight out of the box and have to stretch a bit after they're installed. It's been already 5 days and the gap is the same. Does anyone who had a soft top replacement could share his/her experience? Can the top be adjusted in order to get rid of that gap? Thanks, Fred
  11. Hello, When doing a convertible top calibration using piwis on my 03 996, it gets stuck after closing the windows. I hear relays clicking in the doors constantly after the windows fully close. Then I get an operation timeout error. In normal operation windows work fine, they close and open with one click, and then I hear relay clicking one time after reaching max/min position. Any idea what might be an issue here? Also, should the calibration start with windows going up and not down? Also, when I trigger windows to go up/down using drive links in piwis, they work fine, with relays clicking once when operation finishes.
  12. hello just bought a 2002 boxster 73k miles top chatters or drags while going up or down... can only operate if I keep pushing the switch and releasing it... it opens and or closes in spurts.. I have checked fuses changed top relays (twice) changed motor (three times) parking brake light is on so switch seems to be working- have greased or oiled all tracks and hinges I have not changed cables or transmissions any ideas on what to try would be greatly appreciated (ps also changed micro switch at mirror) thank you
  13. My top was working fine until today. The top started to open, the clamshell opened only on the left (drivers) side about 10 inches. I gave a little tug on the right side to see if I could free it but it did not cooperate at all. I moved it slightly back and forward with the dash button, then slam, the top drops closed hard. Then the clamshell closed with the button. Just happened and I drove it home and its late. Any ideas what would cause one side to operate and not the other? The motor did sound like it was starting to labor a second prior to the pop that dropped the top down to the fully closed position. Any ideas as to what caused the initial one sided operation and binding? Could the problem have begun as a faulty clamshell pushrod and through stressing the motor while stressed broken a cable? The top dropped down evenly and abrupt to the closed position. Thanks for any assistance,
  14. Okay well against advice i bought a 99 porsche back in august because it was in great condition etc. I have been having it worked on here and there when i have a chance since august (both diy and mechanic for more advanced things) So far the fixes have included serpentine belt, fuel filter, oil filter and oil change, master brake cylinder, air filter, wheels, both window regulators, and steering wheel bracket.Every now and then we have had problems with the top not wanting to come down but for the most part it always works fine(yes i know about making sure the brake is all the way up etc) but the MAF code came up last week and they are trying to get the top to go down to acces the engine compartment but it just wont go down. they said that when the light on the dashboard for the convertible top isnt even showing anymore when the car turns on. They checked the fuses and the fuses are fine . Checked B6 and D3. Do you guys know of anything i can do to see why its not working or even to manually try to get it down so we can access the engine compartment. Aside from that since we got it, when the car is idling it tends to stall at times with the idling dropping below 7k. We have bene going down the list of things it could be and was hoping the changing out the MAF would fix it since that was the code that was now showing but if now what else could be the problem? Seeing as to how much ive put into this car already and i absolutley love this car i drove it from cali to texas and it drives great, but it seems that every time i get one problem out of the way another one arises :/ Should i try to fix up the last of it and hope thats it or just sell it and try to recoup my losses?any and all information or help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help
  15. I just bought a 2005 Porsche Boxster a few months ago and recently noticed that one of the plastic covers that are attached underneath the clam shell which covers the push rods is missing. The left side plastic cover is there and but I'm missing the right side plastic cover. I'm not sure how important this cover is. Maybe it provides protection for the convertible motor and push rod. I wonder if it helps with the wind noise because the missing side (right side) seems to have more wind noise when the top is up. I need help finding the part number for the missing cover so I can buy a replacement.
  16. The convertible top on my Boxster has a verticle tear close to the seam. I'd like to replace it with a Porsche part, but my local dealer quoted $3200 just for the part (labor not included). That seems outrageous, since the OEM part seems to be available on-line for less than $1000. I don't want to attempt the labor myself. Any advice is appreciated.
  17. My convertible top stopped working on my 2004 Boxster S. After researching the possible causes I discovered that the driver-side pushrod attached to the V-lever was bent and the plastic tip broken. The passenger side pushrod appeared intact. I replaced both sides with new pushrods and tips and made sure that the length of both were exact and the same as the pushrod on the passengers side. All seemed well and the mechanism attempted to raise and lower the top but the leading edge of the top would catch on the back of the driver-side rollbar during the raise operation. I can manually free the top so that it continues to raise but the operation ends and the motor stops when the leading edge of the top is about two inches from the windscreen latch point. Now what?
  18. I am buying a 996 Cab. The clamshell opens and you can hear a motor whirring but the top will not move. I can open/close the top manually. Anyone have an idea as to what that may be?
  19. Occasionally the "timing" or "alignment" of my convertible top gets off and it locks up. Ussually, this occurs just short of engaging with the locking motors in the windshield frame. What can I do to correct the problem, short term and longer term? Thanks!
