  2. No you aren't... The conversion you suggest is complicated by the differing engine control electronics. A 2.7 to 3.2 is easy compared to this. So the very fact that you are asking such basic questions says to me that you aren't experienced enough to pull off this swap. Can be done? Yes. Easy? Not at all. Cheap, no because of the eGas (3.2) versus non-eGas (2.5). Be content with having a great handling car with adequate horsepower to get you in trouble. If you want more, buy a S model. Having had a '99 base 2.5 TIP and a '01 S 3.2 TIP, the difference in most driving daily driver situations is not that significant. I'd be just as happy to have my '99 back (totaled). ~40 hours for an experienced mechanic who had all the parts on hand and no problems with used parts...that translates to $4k plus parts.
  3. Can a good top shop install just a new plastic window? Yes. If you don't have comprehensive or don't want to use your insurance, you can do the cheap route. If the insurance company is buying, then let them replace the top (and consider adding your own $ to upgraade to the glass top). Ask here or on www.ppbb.com or at a dealer who in your area does Porsche tops. Gotta tell us where you live/work.
  4. 986 or 987? Known problem with 987s and there is a TSB fix for it. Emissions waranties are different in CA from the rest of the US so read your warranty book and make sure you know what Porsche should pay for and what you should. Since you have a CPO, read the CPO document.
  5. My apologies to you You asked an intelligent question and got nothing but crap for answers. In an attempt to answer the question, I searched through the parts list that often answers such questions for probably 15 minutes only to be stymied. Which may explain why you haven't gotten an intelligent answer, because others are struggling to come up with the answer to a question they have never seen posed before. My guess is some sort of pressure relief valve. But I can't prove that.
  6. The sleeve issues were solved before 2.7 engines.
  7. If you have concerns You can always go rear Ribs now and then all 4 PS2s later when the Ribs are all pretty much worn out at the same time. The general rule is you can get 2 rear tires for 1 front, kind of the reverse of the brake pads. You do know that PS2s on 17" would require a size change too at the time you do the fronts. And Ribs are a pretty darn good street tire and that is the way you describe your driving. As to the arguement advanced which says no problems except if you drive hard, who of us "normal road drivers" knows when we will be called upon to do some avoidance where the forces will cause us to be driving hard. It is in those few second that a tire of the best qualities may be needed. It is why I never understand people who buy expensive cars with wonderful suspensions and then drive their tires till cord is showing. IMHO, YMMV

  11. Get it replaced ... Your insurance company has no right to force you to accept a non-original looking repair. And depending on the year of your car, you might want to get a glass window version of the top. $400 parts, 8-10 hours labor There is a special tops section of the forums here that should give you ideas if you browse there.

  13. How many hours of labor does the standard labor rates manual say to replace a single O2 sensor. No prior diagnosis needed, jusy the book rate in hours to replace a single sensor.

  15. I've heard of neither of the problems you cited as even uncommon occurrences. Once the original batch of bad 97-98 engines were replaced, the Boxster engines have been reliable with many people posting stories of their lasting well into the second hundred thousand miles so far. In fact one recent posting showed the odometer at 143k and the speedometer at 143 MPH. Hardly babied. Can you damage many engine by hot rod'ing it before it is warmed up or over-reving it by blowing a shift? Sure. But driven reasonably and even aggressively, they last by all accounts I've read over the last 3 years of ownership and participation in multiple online Boxster forums. My 2.5 went to 110 after it was warm. I change the oil, watch the temp and drive it as it was designed to be driven. I expect it to last.
  16. The Porsche engineers, after wind tunnel and track testing decided that the shape of the spoiler for the Cayman needed to be different than for the 987 Boxster. Do you suppose that they did the same for the Cayman spoiler on the Boxster and rejected it as an alternative because it didn't do the job as effectively? Do you suppose the after market folks ever really test their products beyond "will it sell"? The presumption that we know better than the engineers based on what looks good to our eye obviously bothers me. Lots of places the real speed is over the 75 MPH deploy point. I-95 up the east coast last Sunday would have seen deployment 90% of the time. At 90 MPH, will it make a big difference? Under what conditions? Who knows and I'll bet the makes of the spoilers don't either.
  17. For a P-car, there are 3 classes of code readers with varing degrees of capability between them. 1. PST2 reader. Used hundreds of $. New thousands. Need a multi-volume repair manual and other specialized tools to really use it to diagnose many things. What the dealer should use. Reads/resets codes, sets options. 2. Durametric software that runs on a laptop. Less capable than #1, better than #3. Reads/resets codes, sets some but not all options. For example, can reset airbag warning light but can't turn on OBC like #1 can. Not keyed to repair manual proceedures. 3. Code readers. Actron, etc. Reads/resets codes, sets no options. Displays generic meanings. Need Porsche list of codes (available here on renntech). Not keyed to repair manual proceedures. I have an Actron CP9135. Class #3. $80 if I recall. Does what it says it does but is no help in really getting in and letting me find out what is really what is wrong like an experienced mechanic will do using the PST2, specialized Porsche tools, Porsche repair manuals and experience. For the occasional reading, go to AutoZone or other repair shops where they will read for free. Just because you have one of these CLass #3 devices, don't think it is really going to help you diagnose the hard ones (see the posting on the P0507 code today). One code can mean many things and there can ve doxens of diagnostic steps before you solve the problem. No, it won't hurt.
  18. I call it the "build" sticker. Options are marketing speak, the build sticker shows what technically went in when the car is built no matter how they were ordered.
  19. I'm pretty much with Chris on this with the following comments.... I've heard of 180k plus Boxsters. 2.5 engines are fairly available with mid-level mileage. 2.5 Boxsters in a serious accident get totalled, not rebuilt. Thus used engines are available. There are engine rebuilders. So could a 97-99 Boxster be kept running to 300k .... sure. Assuming you want to forgo the latest from the P-car marketeers.
  20. But keep an eye on the level .... And if it drops again, you have to begin solving the reason why it drops. You can go years without needing to top off. Is your cap on tight? Any condensation on the trunk lid? Any moisture on or under the carpet in the trunk?
  21. I wouldn't just because it shouts "look at me, I'm trying to attract attention". I've done subtle mods like tail lights and sidelights but aero kits and side skirts and spoilers and speedster humps just make no sense to me. But it is your car and if that is the sort of look you prefer, go to it. People have different tastes and that is why they make cars in multiple colors. As to the impact on airflow, it is negligible at any reasonable street speed. Above that I'd bet it does have a negative effect as it would disturb the flow coming off the stock spoiler. Something to consider, does it attract attention in a way that is going to draw unwanted attention...from thieves or cops?
