Squeal on start up and smoke top engine 02 996

Recommended Posts

Only occurs on cold start... squeal and smoke go away quickly.  Had a P0430 code as well. Cleared and hasn’t returned. Can anyone help diagnose.

Also get very slight surging at constant speed. Engine was recently reconditioned. Heading to shop in a week  it’s the soonest they can get me in  unfortunately it’s a 200 mile drive

I would wager you have an AOS on the way out; have them hook up a digital manometer to the oil fill cap, you should not have more than 5 inches of water vacuum fully warmed up.  If it is higher, or surges, you are in the market for an AOS.

The squeal is your SAI pump. It needs lubrication. You can hear it winding down at 1:41 on the 1st video. The smoking at 0:28 is not normal. Could be oil dripping on the right header.

The tail pipe smoking on the 2nd video is oil burning in bank 2 cylinders. Check if the oil level is good and also the AOS vacuum level as John mentioned above. Has anyone touched the bank 2 pistons/cylinders such as a rebuild?

you know.... I think you’re right. I noticed when I bought it the oil on dipstick was on the high side of stick. I asked if the car had been overfilled.. he said no.  I’m thinking it was. Now its just above the min mark on the stick. Hopefully it just all burned off and didn’t go anywhere it shouldn’t be.

Lot less smoke on start up now. Engine runs quieter.

Now if I could just figure out this mild annoying surging at constant speeds. Fn annoying.

Bring this thread back again. Still getting that ticking sound from passenger side. It seems to quiet down after a drive and up to temp. Is this normal or should I have this looked at. Oil just changed and is between 2 dots on stick and 1 bar below full on electronic gauge.
The engine was remanufactured 5 k miles ago. The warranty on the engine was transferred to me at time of purchase. So if this is ticking is abnormal and  internal it should be covered
