Have a 2003 996 C4S and my cruise control stopped working recently. At first, it wouldn't hold but light would illuminate then now light will not illuminate and and still not hold. Fuse checked good but I need to know how many relays are involved and where are they located on the relay board and else where. Any other suggestion would also be helpful too.

A failed, failing (intermittent) rear brake light will result in disabling the CC. Upgrading to LEDs, especially the high mount, will simulate an open brake light bulb/circuit.

read a posting last week about how a floor mat prevented the clutch pedal switch from working and so the car wouldn't start. could your problem be in the clutch switch?

ps: just looked at the recent posts.... hope the problem is the clutch switch as I understand it is a relatively simple fix. good luck....

Keep in mind that the "Cruise Control" clutch pedal switch is not the same as the "Ignition Interrupter" switch on the same pedal. You need to find the same type of switch as on the brake pedal, but with a Red colored body.

My cruise control will not hold either.  When you turn on ignition Green light on dash lights then goes out.  When pushing in the button to turn on cruise dash light lights as long as I hold the button in.  All brake lights are functioning and I have replaced the Clutch Switch (which was fine anyways).   If I hold in the on switch cruise will engage and work but as soon as I let off the dash light goes out and cruise disengages.

Same problem as post above. Took in to local Porsche dealer -- he told me I needed a new steering column --  cost in excess of $1000. At that point I decided I could live without cruise control. Everything else works fine.

 I can not imagine what the steering column has to do with the cruise control, the switch on the column is a separate part and thus to order and assemble separately. $ 1000 my god.

Don't do it.  RFM is right, how could this issue be related to the "steering column."  Even in the older cars, the turn signal/bright lights assembly merely attached to the steering column.  The cruise control is electronic and has nothing to do with the steering of the car.  Check this out with a good indie shop before you accept the dealer recommendation.  The cruise control push button on/off is located at the end of the cruise control lever, right?  I can't believe that the cruise control assembly is somehow permanently attached to the steering column itself.  Can you get a schematic book of the column?  I'd bet it's a part that goes on and off.  Good luck.

It seems like it's just the latching mechanism on the switch. Push once, latches on, push again turns off - since it lights and the cc operates if you hold the switch, the contact is being made, the switch just isn't latching. I would take the stalk apart and see if there's a part # on the switch. Here's a link to the diagram for the parts in question http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-parts/hardparts.php?dir=996-99-05&section=903-10 it doesn't show the switch in question per se', but it could be one of the items labeled "cap"...FWIW the whole "column/switch assembly" is only $521.00 so...Good luck

It  seems that the switch is just a momentary and not a latching switch.  Would have to be a momentary that would send a pulse to the computer to turn on. That way when you turn car off cruise goes off.  A latching switch in this situation would not make sense.  Appears to be a logic issue... Perhaps there is an issue in the DME programming.

"I have seen in 2-3 cases where customers have disconnected and reconnected their batteries many times in a short amount of time or a battery dies multiple times that cc coding is lost. Usually this would be accompanied by an error in the DME or Gauge cluster that would reference the "EEprom"

I have a 2002 996. I replaced the four stalk turn signal/computer switch/headlight high-low beam and cruise control switch when the plastic turn signal canceling mechanism broke. The cruise control worked fine until I replaced the assembly but now it won't set. The indicator light on the dash comes on when the cruise switch is engaged but it will not set at any speed. I heard somewhere that the new switch has to be programmed before it will work but that makes no sense to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The four stalk itself does not get programmed, but the dash does.  If you have access to a Porsche specific scan tool like the Durametric Pro, you can quickly check to see if the cruise system is activated or not.

I have the Durametric software but I don't think it's the Pro series. I did a scan a few months ago after I discovered the cruise didn't work and there was a message regarding the cruise control but I don't remember what it said and I don't think I had an option to change anything on the cruise control system. I'll scan it again and post the message.
