  1. Does anyone know where to buy a service manual for the 997.1 Carrera? I cannot find one. I have seen a 996 manual from Bentley manuals, and there are many similarities between the 996 and 997- but there are notable differences, too. Thanks, Jim
  2. The left door key switch on my 00’ 996 c4 will not lock or unlock. I took the handle and bracket out of the door frame. I was told what usually breaks is the cylinder but nothing appears to be broken. I don’t want to buy a new key so simply replacing the bracket isn’t an option. Is there a straight forward solution or do I need a specialist?? Any my feedback would be much appreciated thanks!
  3. Hello all! I've got a 1999 996 Carrera that hasn't had any mechanical issues outside of a water pump replacement earlier this year. Just today I noticed that when in 3rd to 5th gear (I haven't had it on freeways to see if it's in 6th too, but most likely it does) in the mid rpm ranges (2500 - 3000+) there is a vibration that I can feel through the gas pedal and throughout the car. When the gas is let up and/or when the vehicle is coasting the vibration goes away. The vibration seems to only occur on acceleration and does seem to be coming from the rear. The check engine light came on as well, at first it was flashing and is now constant. Any tips on what this could be? Drive shaft? Engine mount? Catalytic converter? .....?
  4. Just posted a docu. on my completed 02 996 M96 3.6 l engine rebuild for a gorgeous C4 cab barn find, I bough back in August 17 as roller with complete engine (Head&Case failure). http://ow.ly/SjDf30fJkID It is not about performance upgrades or how it should be done. Is about the process to get it done with very details on the critical steps for the hands-on engineer. The car drives fantastic now, and if it breaks I will be confidently enough to spend the needed money and time to order on the new hard parts (Nickies, rods, heads, etc.... For now I did not spend anything other than on a high-mileage used 997.1 donor engine and a couple of 996 cases with paired pistons/rings from engines with other type of failures). I wish I had an alike docu. when I started - so I share it here, and hopefully it is useful for someone who wants to bring a M96 996 3-chain engine back to life .
  5. Hello everyone, I am new to the forum. I own a 98, bone stock, manual Carrera and here is my attempt at scattering the clouds over 996. Hope you'll like & share.
  6. Hi folks, I live in Boca Raton, I have a 2005 997 - 911 with 93k miles. I'm not a rich man. I'm looking for recommendations for service and repair in the south Florida area ideally someone who would like to work on a gentle restoration or a recommendation for a reasonable shop that will do good work for a reasonable price i.e. not dealer rates. I need a replacement alternator i think as the bearings have just gone (sounds like that anyway) and all the belts should be due by now. Anyone with experience in maintaining this vehicle who wants to earn a little extra please contact me or if anyone has a show they would personally recommend I'd be very grateful. Mark.
  7. I am almost there with the Brake job on my project. One problem though. How do I connect the hard brake line to the caliper? I have connected the soft brake hose line from the hard line coming from the master cylinder area. However the hard brake line (small curved piece with red cap) doesn't seem to line up to the connector on the caliper. Do I bend it and make it fit or is there an actual part to order. Here are some pics. I tried to find good steel lines but have been having a hard time finding some blue ones.
  8. Hi everybody I have never used a forum before and I don't know how it works exactly so I am hoping I don't break any rules here I just bought a 2009 Carrera but the navigation is not installed. I want to install the Navigation but I am not really sure what parts I'm missing. I took it to a Porsche dealership and they told me that I need to buy the entire PCM for 5K. I read somewhere that you only need to buy the Nav module where the disk is and the antenna but I don't know if this is true or not. Any advice?/ Thanks in advance
  9. Car: 1999 C2 6spd, 158,000miles Okay guys, need some thoughts: Car runs terribly anyway, but I have been noticing more and more what I describe as "backlash" , or a kind of shudder from the driveline when going from coasting to on the gas and vice versa. It is very violent and obvious. feels the same on cruise control as well. I am leaning towards engine mounts? Idle is extremely rough as well which adds up in my book.
  10. Hello! My 2003 Carrera 4s has something tricky. It's a 2nd hand car... When you open the door the car's dome light does not lit, nor the doors... But if I put the key on the ignition the it turns on, both: Dome and doors.... I checked all fuses and they're ok... A relay removed perhaps because of the buzzer or something? Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
  11. Hi all, I am new to the forum and the Porsche community! I am currently in the market for a 996 911 C4S. I located an EXTREMELY clean C4S with the following options and specs. Because I am new to the community, I am not exactly sure what it is worth. It seems there is a large discrepency between one comparable car to another on eBay (sold listings). 2003 911 C4S •75,XXX miles •Manual transmission •Little to no cosmetic or mechanical flaws - interior and paint look brand new •All services up to date (IMS issue not resolved...) •Carrera White Exterior •Natural Brown Leather Interior Options: XPA - Thicker Steering Wheel XE8 - Dark Burr Maple Gear Lever XE9 - " " Hand Break X45 - Colored Instrument Dials X99 - Natural Leather Interior 288 - Headlamp Washer 446 - Wheel Caps With Colored Porsche Crest 680 - Bose Sound Opinion on value? Thanks everyone for you time, BB
  12. I guess some people like to personalize their cars. I guess it accomplished what the owner wanted, it made me snap a picture! Would you do something like this?
  13. Hi, I need winter tires on my 1999 Porsche 996 Carrera. I found some used 19" (99736215602) ET57 8x19 front with 225/40r19 and (99736216202) ET51 11x19 rear with 255/35r19. My question is, will these fit my carrera? The owner have had it on a 996 Turbo (not 997 Turbo). Thanks :notworthy:
  14. Hello, I recently purchased a used 2009 Carrera and had it delivered missing the front undercarriage panel, as well as the three panels in the truck area that cover the battery and areas to the left and right, above the boot. Does anyone know how to determine the correct part numbers? Have a source for purchasing these parts? vin# WP0AA29939S706301 Thank you for your time,
  15. I own a 1999 carrera I opened up the top everything went fine. When I got home my hand brake would not engaged so I performed the "emergency operation" for the top as stated on the manual and got the top to close. Found out later a piece of paper got stuck between the hand brake and the switch which prevented it from engaging. So after getting the hand brake to engage again I tried to open the top it is just stuck. You can hear a clicking noise, indicator light would be solid then blink. Do I need to reset the anything or reverse the operation for it to work??? Mind you it did work before that whole hand brake paper situation. Thanks! ~Ram~
  16. Hi everyone, I've got an 01 C2 (my02) and I'm now having trouble removing the key from the barrel. After quite vigorous jiggling I'm able to remove it but the park light stays on as the barrel does not pop out to off position. I have tried some WD40 but to no avail. Also, when the key is being moved to the on position it seems to get there in one movement rather than clicking into the various position/s before ignition and start. The only way I have managed to bring the barrel to off position was by tapping quite hard onto the sides of the barrel once I had the key removed. What could be the cause of this problem? Your comments would be highly appreciated!
  17. Greetings all and thanks in advance: I'm in the midst of shopping for my first Porsche, and decided on the 997.1 as a budding enthusiast. Im looking to get a 2005-2008 Carrera, preferably the 3.8, but I wouldn't cry if I got the 3.6. It's not an "if" I get it, but "when". First, I need help on pricing. I've completed detailed research on Edmunds, MotorTrend, NADA, Clearbook, and Kelley Blue Book, and eBay "completed sales " pricing, making certain to understand the differences in each (asking vs. final sales price, condition, etc.). If I'm offering cash, I figure its reasonable to get something with less than 50k miles for $35k out the door. If I get a warranty, tack 2 grand on that. Am i on planet Earth because all the pricing books say yes (Edmunds has Carrera at $32k and Carrera S at $34k), but dealer told me I was smoking crack when I said that. He said Porsche people always pay over (50k for Edmunds 35k car), because youre paying for the experience. I walked out after he said that, but want to double check. What did you all pay? Need some real life final sale prices if you don't mind sharing. Second, I've seen posts on PPIs. How do I find an independent mechanic for this; extra helpful for DC area recs. What maintenance should I expect in the first year. I looked at the Porsche recommended intervals and used AutoMD for quotes. What is true cost for oil change, spark plugs, brake fluid, etc. I want to keep this car for 10+ years....not planning on reselling. Third: I bought the 5th Ed. Batchelor and Leffingwell Porsche Buyers Guide and read the 996 & 997 sections. Anything else I should read? Lastly, I'm running the VINs in AutoCheck (bought unlimited 30 day..so I can help others looking). One car on Autotrader (Beechwood Dealer) is a retired PDE with 25k miles. Stay away? To see what I'm looking at, I search on all sites with these filters (year: 2005-2008, make/model: porsche 911, mileage: < 50k, price:<$45k, distance:any) Linwoodc3@mac.com. I can email the price breakdowns I came up with...4 slide PDF. MORE IMPORTANT : where should I drive when I get this ( road types)?
  18. Hey guys hoping somebody on here can fill me in on capabilities of the dealer software: Can you adjust the wheel size/speedometer pulse count in the computer? I have owners manual sized tires and the speedometer is WAY off, to the tune of 5mph fast. The speed doesn'tbother me so much as the odometer being way out of proportion to actual miles driven. I am also considering going away form the stock size tires so this would be extremely helpful for that. thanks!
  19. Hey guys, Got my Durametric in hand finally. Plugged in to my 99 C2 to diagnose my airbag light. All I get is "code 0" module failed to initialize. Am I missing some step to accessing the airbag unit? Can durametric not help me on my 99? Off to read some help files/the manual :) thoughts? thanks!
  20. Hey all, New the forum so hello there! Rebuilding a Carrera two and pulling some mangled-a$$ control arms off the front. They are stamped with "996.341.341.05" When I google this number all I get is european eBay listings and some random russian website. Anybody have any idea what this is? Cheap chinese knockoff control arms? I have a 99634105316 to replace it which is clearly a slightly different casting but appears dimensionally similar. I would share a photo but I am in the shop (read- my garage) right now. Cheers! Gabe J
  21. Hi Guys, My rear lid "Carrera" badge's sticker is kind of loosing with the sticky part, in order to repair it, I guess I will need to replace the sticker part, I know the whole emblem is available but as my badge is not damage, I would like to simply replace the sticker in between the emblem and the lid. Does anyone know whether this pre-cut double sided sticker is available and where can I buy them? Thank you Eric
  22. Hello all I just joined this forum something i should have done ages ago. I drive a 2003 996 Carrera 2 Tiptronic with a lot of extras incl the Porsche Sports exhaust and suspension.
