  1. Get a passenger. Put a cell phone in video mode and run it all over the dash and underneath while driving. Pay particular attention to the A-pillar on the passenger side.

  3. Common cause for "it cranks but no start" is the CPS, crank position sensor. Does your tach needle bounce when you try to start? Also, check fuses/relays for the fuel pump.
  4. Go to a Porsche dealer and buy a new filter canister and filter. They are selling them for less than $30 now. Do not run your engine with the bypass valve, which belongs in the bottom of the filter canister, removed. The oil filter will not function properly and will float in the filter canister allowing unfiltered oil to circulate through your engine.

  6. Have you tried an e-gas calibration? Turn on ignition to ON (not start). Wait 60 seconds. You should hear some whirring noise from the engine bay as the Throttle Body runs through a calibration cycle. Turn ignition off, then start as normal. The second thing that comes to mind is the change over in the resonance flap.

  10. From my understanding, cars are made like that. My digital and analog speedometer is consistently exactly 4 MPH faster than actual road speed. Confirmed by many roadside radars. I just adapt.
  11. Nothing in the oil. Oil is oil. One bottle of Techron in the gas tank just prior to doing oil change.
  12. Yes, window regulators have a certain lifespan and in 20 year old cars need to be replaced. In this post you can see the complexity involved in removing and replacing rear window regulators. As far as cost, welcome to Porsche ownership.
  13. Look just to the right of the power steering pump. There is a black box that has a lid. Open the lid and there is the main junction for the starter.   14. It sounds to me from your description that the starter motor is spinning but the solenoid is not kicking in the bendix. Bench testing is one thing. A starter motor requires a tremendous amount of amperage to operate, thus the two circuits to make it happen. One is the main lead (big heavy wire main lead) that spins up the starter motor, and then the smaller lead to the solenoid to kick in the bendix. Are you familiar with the Y-cable? This is the one that connects to the starter circuit from the main junction point in the engine bay. Notorious for failing from internal corrosion. What is the voltage at the main junction box (+ jumper point) in the engine bay?
  15. Two thoughts come to mind since you are saying "oil pooling on the block". I thought you were talking about oil inside the plenum. Have you checked your oil filler tube for cracks? There is also the AOS crossover line that goes from the AOS to Bank 2 that becomes very brittle from heat and then cracks. Both of these can cause rough running. Maybe you should consider having your engine and intake smoke tested.
  16. A failed AOS will dump a bunch of oil in the plenum and it is very difficult to get it all out. It pools in the nooks and crannies of the intake plenum, thus the first sign of AOS failure is exhaust smoke..think like a gigantic smoke screen behind the car. Unless you think the new AOS has failed (which happens...BTW did you put in an original Porsche OE AOS?), I would just monitor this for awhile. Watch your oil level carefully.
  17. You say you have a new battery. Why did you put in a new battery? Was the old one giving you trouble? What size new battery and how many reserve amps? It sounds to me to be just like when the starter gets heat soaked and the solenoid doesn't kick it. Does the starter motor run when you try to start it, and just not engage the bendix gear to the flywheel? It is okay to check the voltage drop between the battery and the engine bay connection with a multimeter. However, when you start disconnecting things to check for corrosion or loose connections, always disconnect the negative lead on the battery first. Usually one of the first culprits in this type of situation is the electrical part of the ignition switch. You might want to replace it first before doing other things.
  18. Sorry to be so short. If it is helpful here is the battery diagram. You could buy either #1 or #4 for a completely new cable with the bolt and nut.   19. I believe they are identical. From what I have read the Boxster and 996 headlights were the same.
  20. Put the LED bulbs back in and test to see if it works like it has for 8 years. If it does, then it is probably (as said) the mix of standard and LED bulbs that makes it not work.
  21. Sheesh..it's a bolt. Go to Ace Hardware and buy a new metric bolt and nut. Also, most auto parts stores have replacement bolts for the battery connector cable.
  22. There is an emergency release cable for the fuel door, just like for the hood and engine lid. Open passenger door and look near the top hinge on the door. You will see a little loop to pull on. Hope you didn't break your fuel door locking pin.
  23. I feel for you. I'm normally over on the 996 forum but this is purely a mechanical problem. Since the coil pack is mostly retained by the tight fit in the spark plug hole, and since you are mostly concerned about it vibrating loose, I would grind the bolt part flush with the flat brass insert with a Dremel grinding disc (small enough to do the job), then use a dab of some silicone glue on the brass insert to hold the coil pack. It is amazing how well it holds, and is completely removable the next time. There are two bolts that hold in the coil pack, so how is the other coil pack bolt?
