Still get P0130 after replacing 02 sensor - any hints

Dear Forum,

 

I have a 2004 Cayenne Turbo with 87k miles on it.  I purchased it used in February and encountered the P0130 code in late April.  I replaced the bank 1, sensor 1 02 sensor (passenger side, in front of catalytic converter) in mid-May, cleared the code and all was well until now.  The code has re-appeared after approximately 150 miles since replacement.  Hs anyone experienced a similar issue of a P0130 code soon after the O2 sensor replacement?  I welcome all suggestions.  FYI - in an attempt to give back to this good community, I did post my replacement procedure in this forum.

 

Some additional background:

1) vehicle was purchased with cat bypasses for both secondary cat's. 

2) vehicle passed Illinois emissions before I purchased it

3) vehicle passed PPI before I purchased it

4) vehicle was purchased with an ECU tune from EP labs

P0130  Oxygen sensor in front of catalytic converter, bank 1 – signal implausible

 

Possible cause of fault

  • Leaking bolts on oxygen sensor
  • Leaks in exhaust system, between engine and catalytic converter
  • Oxygen sensor in front of catalytic converter faulty (shift in characteristics/pollution)

I would start with looking for leaks in the exhaust system.

Hi Folks,

 

Here's an update. The frequency of the P0130 code has steadily increased to almost once every 15 miles.  I keep resetting it with my diagnostic tester but it keeps coming back, as expected.  I took it to a local shop that specializes in Porsches and is recommended in this and other sites as a trusted PPI shop and for repairs.  They did a more comprehensive data logging and graphing and found that this sensor compared to the same pre-cat sensor on the driver side reacted a bit differently in that the suspect sensor (one causing the P0130 code) reacted a bit slower under certain driving conditions.  They also did a physical inspection of the connectors and general listen for exhaust leaks.  They decided to replace the O2 sensor (same model number as the one I purchased in May), test drove it, looked at data and deemed the problem to be solved.

 

I drove it home last night, filled the gas tank (was nearly empty) and parked it.  No problems were observed.  I drove two miles this morning (about 30F outside, little humidity) and the CEL came on with the code being P0103 - same as before.

 

Now, I do have an aftermarket cold air intake with K&N "pyramidal" filters, silicone inlet tubes and an IPD plenum all from a previous owner, two owners ago.  It also has an aftermarket tune, again from two owners ago.  Could any of these items be a contributor to the issue?  I do not see any correlation to any factor (cold or warm engine, full or partial throttle, cold or warm air temperature (at least not until it warms up again and if frequency decreases), etc.) yet.

 

The shop will continue to research the issue by calling their Porsche regional representative and are eager to solve the problem with good old rational thinking before rip&replace of massive amounts of parts  - in other words, they seem to be taking a prudent approach.

 

Any further thoughts, hints, prayers to the Stuttgart gods are most welcome!

Whats the lambda sensor part number your using? Should be 0258007174 as the Bosch part number.

This guy is good, I watched a lot of his videos.

 

One thing to note, the Porsche Cayenne precat lambda sensor produces a measurable milliamp current not voltage for the dme to read. Higher current means richer the mixture and less air is being sensed, lower current is lean mixture and more air sensed. The idea is that the dme should maintain a Lambda 1. Snap throttle will show rich higher current. The sensor should respond within 100ms and both sensors should look very similar when graphed.  

The post cat o2 sensor produces voltage.

Yes that is the correct sensor for our cars. 

 

The fault code relates to an electrical issue and considering this is a new sensor and Same fault it has to be either the wiring loom or dme issue. 

You could get the dme pin diagram and test resistance between plug pins and dme pins.

Just a brief update in case this is of value. 

 

As a precursor, I did watch of few of the videos and they are excellent.  Simple explanations for fairly complex subjects.  Thanks folks for your verification of part number and other hints, which I need to try.

 

On Saturday (60F here and sunny), I drove the vehicle for approx., 4 miles only to have the P0130 code appear again.  I cleared the fault, stopped for 15 minutes, drove another approx. 4 miles and the same thing happened.  This process repeated two other times with the vehicle resting anywhere from 1 hour to zero minutes.  I was trying to gauge if it was related to temperature of the engine and/or exhaust system but I could not find a positive correlation.  On Sunday, I decided that I would clean the MAF sensor and also look at my K&N air filter for excess oil.  The filter appeared fine (no dripping oil) and I cleaned the MAF for approx. 5 minutes.  I had the engine running while spraying the MAF simply to see the reaction.  As expected, the engine stumbled and then regained normal operation a few seconds after.  I also sprayed electronic cleaner on the 02 connector in the engine bay, let it evaporate and then reconnected it.

 

I then took the vehicle for a drive of 50 miles.  I tried many driving conditions - steady pace at 55 mph, fast acceleration from a stop getting the boost past 0.8 bar and then immediately letting off of the throttle (to perhaps test the blow-off valve), normal city stop and go traffic, etc.  It did not fail so I thought that I had solved the problem.  Low and behold, I park the car overnight, drive two miles (about 55F ambient air but engine "cold") and the P0130 code appears.  It's been doing this for the past two days just about every time I start the car, whether it's cold or at full operating temperature.

Hi Folks,

 

I bought a Bluedriver scan tool so that I can actually do data logging simply.  I also have a durametric tool but need to install it.

 

Below listed is a scan that I took after the vehicle was up to temperature.  The bank 1 sensor 1 lamba ratio is a constant value of 1.99 and shows not sign of fluctuation when graphed whereas bank 2 sensor 1 does fluctuate when graphed and also numerically when the data was logged.  I know the values are simply a point in time but sensor 1 bank 1 does not appear functional.  I also cleared the P0130 code but the sensor reading remained at 1.99 and created a pending code of P0130, which makes sense to me.  Also, the back 1 sensor 1 current seems to be high and fuctuate less than bank 2 sensor 1.

 

Again, the sensor was just replaced three weeks ago.

 

Also, when does a pending code get moved to an actual code?  This seems to vary in time and miles.  Is this correct?  If correct then this probably answers why my CEL comes on at different times/miles under the same driving conditions.

Note:  Fuel system status:  "system A" will eventually reach closed loop.  "System B" never reaches closed loop    
                         
Note:  this is after taking out and cleaning passenger side MAF.            
                         

Note:  depending upon how long car has been turned off, bank 1 sensor 1 will slowly start to work.  i.e. - off for 2 hours, starts normally (like in rows 12 through 439, i.e off for 30 minutes it seems like lambda gets biased at around 1.7 but will show spikes that correlate to bank 2 sensor 1.  In other words it looks like it would mimic bank 2 senor 1 but has a constant bias of 1.7)

Well, it's been a while but I do have a positive update after 1 month of what seems to be the root cause/corrective action.  The problem was the O2 sensor connector at the firewall (where 02 sensor plugs in).  Apparently the connector latch broke thus the connector was not secure causing an intermittent fault.  The remedy was to zip tie the connector (interim solution) so that it stays secure.

 

Additional background:

 

Since my last posting on 2/26/17, I continued to drive the Cayenne, resetting the CEL with my BlueDriver OBD!! scanner.  My emissions test date came about in December 2018 so I decided to be more proactive to find the issue.  I replaced the K&N cold air intake with the standard air filter setup to remove any doubt about air filter oil contamination of the MAF sensor.  I also replaced both MAF sensors.  The issue remained.

 

I followed Lauren's advice and looked for leaks in the exhaust system by creating a smoke machine (see YouTube) and testing for leaks.  After numerous tests and inhaling mineral oil fumes (not recommended) there were no leaks to be found.  Going beyond this myself would have required too much time so I brought the Cayenne into an independent shop that I trust.  They ended up finding that the connector latch was broken, applied a zip tie and then road tested for a few days.  I picked the Cayenne up, passed the emissions test and it has been fine for almost 1 month.  Keeping my fingers crossed that, after writing this, that it remains to be the root cause and "remedy"

      Unfortunately, I am back with another problem or problems........
      A couple of days ago a check engine light popped up on my 997.2s and because it is my daily driver, I was not able to immediately diagnose the issue. I went ahead and ordered a "Carsoft POR II" scanner off amazon as i thought it would help my understanding in what the problem was. (Getting to the point.....)   Today while I was driving home from class, the car was running very rough. I decided to pull over and give the scanner a go...

      Hey guys,
       
      So I'm having this issue that is driving me crazy. My SAI (Secondary AIr Injection) and Oxygen Sensor are not reaching "Ready Status"

      A little background about my car. 
      2006 Boxster S 3.2L
      FVD Exhaust system
      GMS Headers with 200 cell cats - has all 4 O2 sensors attached.
      996 throttle body and distribution hose
      ECU Tuning Group tune
       
      I had the car up in BC Canada since 2009 (although it is a US car) and had no problems passing the sniffer and obdII tests - both before and after all the mods except for the ECU tune. 
       
      I went to get my emissions testing done last week in Texas and failed due to the 2 systems being in not-ready status. I figured it might have to do with the cat delete ( ROW) configured in the tune. I sent my ECU back to ETG in California and had them re-flash my ECU in order to re-enable the O2 sensors. 
      I cleared all codes and figured I would start fresh. I drove the car about 120 miles and attempted to follow the drive cycle mentioned in the forums but it was really tough with the roads out here. Everything is in ready status except for the SAI, and the O2 sensor. I can manually start the SAI using the Durametric system so I would believe the pump is not bad; however, I'm not
      sure that I"m hearing the SAI start up when I cold start the engine.
       
      For testing purposes I unplugged my O2 sensors from both bank1 and  bank2 and they both threw fault codes which confirms that the ECU tune re-activated my sensors. 
       
      I've uploaded a few pictures with the results from a OBDII app as well as the Durametric Software to my Google Drive. I'm not quite sure how to interpret the Durametric Voltage results - especially the negative 50 V and -127V - seems quite odd.

      Check Engine Light came on and the codes for the Durametirc software were P1125 Oxygen sensing range 1 Cylinder (4-6) and P1123 Oxygen sensing range 1 Cylinder (1-3). I cleared the codes using Durametric Diagnostic Software and no check engine light appeared. The other day the check engine light came on so I decided to check the fuel pressure.
      I activated the fuel pump through the Durametric Software and the reading was 52 psi.Also, here is another caveat which may or may not have something to do with the Check Engine Light. When using the Durametric Software it only allows me to access the Engine Option for ME5.2.2 for 1997-1999 which is fine. However, it won't allow me to access any other options like the ABS/DSC/ PSM 5.3 for 1997-2001 or the Instrument Cluster K01 for 1997-2000 and it always tells me the cable is unplugged (even though it is not and the green light is on) for the Airbag, Air Conditioning, Alarm, etc.I sent my cable back to Durametrics and they checked it and said it was something to do with my wiring.
      Any suggesstions about fixing the oxygen sensing issue or troubleshooting the other issue so I canuse the software?

      I don't think there is an easy answer to this but I figure I would try before admitting defeat and taking my girl into the doctor. I recently had my CEL come on and it was throwing an MAF code along with a P0160. Since I sprayed out my MAF about a year ago, I decided to replace it, and got the above codes. I replaced my bank 2 post cat sensor, which was on the topside of the exhaust on the drivers side (pipes cross in the back)...let me tell you it was tough to get out, even with an 02 tool. But I got it and replaced it with a a Bosch O2 sensor, same number and all. Cleard the codes and still I get the same. Also, I can nearly watch my fuel gague moving, I burned about 1/3 tank on a 40 mile trip... (I know we can all do that when we try, but this time I wasn't trying, I was driving sensible!!)
      From all of the reading I have done, this seems to be an electrical issue. I am not very well versed in ohms, volts and amps I am afraid. Am I at the end of my DIY path on this one? Any suggestions...is it possible the new 02 sensor is bad? It was bought from Pelican.
