  1. I had an oil change on the P!G (M1 synthetic) before a trip and that's when the trouble started... The driver side wheel well makes a gentle creaking sound at idle RPM, which seems to disappear at higher RPM. It sounded like a small frog quietly chirping in the wheel well and I was worried it was a turbo. When we popped the hood, there was sound of a vacuum near the intake. The PCV to crankase hose (part #5) collapses while the engine is running and the oil fill port sucks strong vacuum if the fill cap is removed. My local independent mechanic (I'm some distance from a Porsche specialist) found that hose 14 and 15 are both cracked and identified their failure as causing the sound. Cause of failure is presumed age/heat. Since replacing those two components are $370-400 in hoses, is there something else we should be looking into as a cause of these pipe failures? Searching the forums I came upon a discussion that makes me think maybe we should be looking at the PCV valve, air oil separator membrane, and the diverter valves? I'm wrench-familiar with NA cars and new to turbos so I'd appreciate your input. Is the restricted airflow or vacuum interruption causing turbo noise? Has anyone else seen this and what else should I be checking? We do see the boost gauge work normally or at least what it has historically (under acceleration it hits 0.8 bar/pegged and then holds near 0.6-0.7) before these issues started. The rest of the car seems to work well, aside from the a sticky secondary air injection check valve on the passenger side. 2. I recently had my 2004 CTT in the dealer to track down an oil leak from the front left corner of the cayenne, the dealer indicated the oil leak conditions could stemmed from either the left turbo or a faulty oil seperator (located in the valve cover). I've already replace my oil seperator 2 1/2 years ago and no smoke has been observed when the turbo's kick in. Therefore, it looks like my left turbo is leaking and needs to be replaced. My plan is to remove the left turbo and have it rebuild for under $500 vs. a new OEM turbo for $1900. My question to forum is, can the turbocharger be replace without removing the engine from vehicle? Is it a DIY project or should I take it to a shop for the remove and replace?
  3. Hello everyone, Does anyone have or know where I may have the bolt torque specs for a 2008 Cayenne Turbo? I need pretty much the specifications for all the bolts and nuts that would be included in a block replacement. I'm getting the back rebuilt by 928 Motorsports and reinstalling with an experienced friend. However, it's nearly impossible to find the specs for these motors. Additionally, if there's a place where I could find a complete 957 workshop manual, could someone please advise? Thank you.
  4. Just wanted to say thanks to the community helped answer some questions about the scoring on my 2008 CTT 957. My next question is, does anyone know where I may purchase a complete engine seals and gasket kit for a 2008 Cayenne Turbo? Or if these are unavailable as a whole unit, had anyone rebuilt their engine from the cylinder scoring or something similar and have a parts list of required seals and gaskets which need changed? Additionally, are there any other suggestions on parts that I should change some I'll have the motor apart? Anything would help at this point. Thanks
  5. Transitioning from previous thread to new one-- Replaced the water pump and performed the 60,000 mile service in my 04 Turbo Cab. Car runs great except now I am getting overboost to 1.0-1.3 bar. I don't hold it there to be sure. That said, I realize it is likely a vacuum issue but the only lines I touched during the repair are the one from the Y-Pipe to the switch and the one from the switch to the plastic line that goes to the driver side of the engine. Flashlight and inspection mirror show the 3rd line on the underside of the switch to be connected. Any thoughts on where else to look? Thanks Owen
  6. Hi - on my 06 CTTS, over the last few months I noticed occasionally awful smell inside the cabin while driving. My research so far indicates that it is emitted from vents when AC system is on. Believe it smells like sth. burned, and is not present when I switch AC system completely off. Did anybody experience this before on a 955 Cayenne, Turbo or Turbo S ? Thanks in advance. PS.: side note. It may be coincidence or completely unrelated, but as far as electrical problems I am noticing for about comparable amount of time that the horn is dead (silence when pressing the steering wheel center...).
  7. Hi mates, I purchased last week a 996 Turbo (2002). Unfortunetly there was neither an operation manual of the car nor of the PCM System. Is there a chance to get one (as orig. book or PDF file) in english or german?
  8. Hi everyone. We have a 1982 Kremer built 930 that we have absolutely no documentation about. Does anyone out there know what differentiates a Kremer 930 from a regular 930? The engine is about to be rebuilt (broken rocker, detonation evidence on all pistons, broken piston rings, crack in head around valve guide and a big end that wasn't going to last much longer) and I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction for sourcing parts and information. Someone has done work on the engne at some stage and removed the turbo oil scavenge pump and fittings so we're looking for that system (including cam/cams) as well. Any help would be most appreciated.
  9. Hello, I recently bought a Cayenne S 4.8 from 2008. After a month the HPFP went down so I repaired that (900 euro), no problem if it is just a standalone incident but it seems to be very common for the 4.8 engines. Mine was already replaced with the former owner in 2010 and 2011. My engine was replaced in 2010 by Porsche and now this engine has around 100k kms (so the second HPFP failed just after a couple of thousand miles). This made me thinking about the build quality of the Porsche engines. The HPFP is not Porsche made I guess (Continental is written on it) but if "I would be" Porsche, I would look for another manufacturer for these parts. So I already got the impression that they are not as typically German as I thought. Then I got in touch with other Cayenne owners over the internet/facebook etc. And the first 10 owners (with a 4.8 engine) warned me for cylinder scoring because they all had their engine replaced or sold their car because of this problem. I knew the 4.5 had this problem but I remember calling a Porsche dealer a couple of months ago to ask if the 4.8 was better build and they said it didn't have any issues like the 4.5 had with the cylinder walls. So I checked again why my car had a new engine and indeed, also mine had scored cylinder walls at the time. Some people say it happens because of starting the car in freezing conditions but in Belgium, it doesn't get that cold like in Alaska or Scandinavia. I suspect just a bad build engine or the wrong use of materials for the cylinder walls. It would be nice to know how common this is on the 4.8. I am very interested in how a car works and why an engine can fail so I would like to know who has or had an Cayenne 4.8 (S, GTS or Turbo) and if you ever encountered this problem.
  10. Hi, I'd like to ask a question that has been asked, discussed, youtube videoed etc... My apologies, but I've read most of them and haven't found anything similar. I'm looking at a 2004-2006 Cayenne Turbo that I don't want to turn into an engine money pit. I've listened to 8, all cold and most have a very slight knock on the drivers side of the engine. I'm wondering if this is the beginning to the end or some explainable sound. You can only hear it once it drops to a low idle. I went to my local dealer in Denver and they stated they have no way to diagnose, would not perform a new car inspection, but would do a compression check. I realize this is tough to know when the dreaded engine knock may come due to extreme cold, piston expansion, etc...etc... I'm also aware that the turbos were less prone. If I'm going to drop a new engine into an old cayenne, I'd rather do it on a $10k one than $18k which is the present range for a 2004-2005 in CO. Thanks for anyone's help and as a newbie, I hope to purchase a Cayenne and give back via DIY but don't really want to deal with engine issues for 200k+. Thanks again, Frank
  11. Hello Members, Just found some instructions for changing spark plugs without having to remove the rear bumper/license plate light, and intercoolers. The process is more or less - remove rear wheels, and then remove various heat shields - does this seem viable? Here is the link I found: http://bd8ba3c866c8cbc330ab-7b26c6f3e01bf511d4da3315c66902d6.r6.cf1.rackcdn.com/Porsche996TMajorMaintenanceupdate.pdf Using this method will save a bunch of time let me know, ewholz
  12. I am bit confused because 2 different Porsche Indys had different suggestions to the problem. My car, when cold after sitting 5-6 days when I get in and start it, it starts flawlessly. After driving for about 5-10 minutes to get to the grocery or gas station the car needs 2-3 turns of the key to start. Sometimes it starts with 1st turn (very rare when hot). Battery 6 months old, although it doesn't seem as a power problem. When the car was in for a PDCC line leak, I mentioned the problem to the mechanic who noticed it and told me next time we should clean the starter (don't know what that means). He asked 250 Euros for cleaning! wtf!!!!!!! I was passing by another reputable Indy which is 70km far from where I leave, stopped and mentioned the problem to get a second opinion and from what he felt, he told me close an appointment cause it might be something fuel related. P.S No boost leak, constant idle rpm, no reduced power or so, car runs great but I am bit concerned about the start issue in fear of getting stuck during a trip. Car has 125k miles, fully serviced in July 2015 (spark plugs, oil, belt, filters, etc) Any suggestions??
  13. Just purchased a 2008 CTTS and the previous owner is running a staggered set up Front:275/40/20 Rear:315/35/20. The current tyres Goodyear Wrangler F1 need replacement and I would appreciate some suggestions from the members here. -The 1st and expensive choice: P-Zeros at 1250 Euros -Continental Contisport SUV: at around the same price -And a guy at a local store suggested Atturos AZ850 which are at around 630 Euros. What do you guys think? Any other suggestions?? Thanks in advance
  14. Hi to all in the forum, I am Chris from Greece and I am looking for a piece of advice. I have found a CTT 2005 with 35000 miles that a bank sells after being abandoned for 2+ years and not in garage. As the price is tempting and I am looking forward to spend some cash to bring back to the road. What do you thing I must expect in terms of Service, taking for granted that all liquids in engine and trans are going to be replaced, new tyres etc. P.S. probably a conversion to 2007 F/L look is a thought. http://www.renntech.org/forums/uploads/downloadedimages/edit.gif' title="Edit/Delete Message" alt="edit.gif">
  15. Hi, I'm new to this website and new to Porsche ownership and was hoping that I could get some help with an issue that's just occurred with the coolant expansion tank of my 04 Cayenne Turbo. I recently purchased this vehicle back in June after selling my range rover. At the time I did quite a bit of research and discovered the issues with the coolant pipes, carden shaft bush, ignition coils etc that were prevalent with the early Cayenne models. After viewing a few vehicles that were less than desirable I eventually found a Cayenne in pristine condition, and more importantly with all the aforementioned work carried out by the dealer. I've been using the Cayenne everyday since and can not fault it. Yesterday as I arrived home I heard a loud popping type noise when I was parking the vehicle. After stepping out I noticed a pool of fluid on the floor, located at the right hand side of the vehicle. On inspection I realised that it was coolant fluid and refiled the expansion tank to try and locate the leak. At first I thought it might have been one of the rubber hoses in and around that area. After removing the airbox to gain access to the area I found that it was the expansion tank that had split (see pics below). Is this a common problem with the cayennes and has anyone else had this issue? I've got to say that I expected a lot more from prestige manufacturer such as Porsche. The expansion tank was only manufactured in Sept 2003 and it should really last the lifetime of the vehicle!! Now, this is were I need your help; I've ordered the part and should get round to fitting it this weekend. Can anyone tell me if the cayenne has a bleed screw of some description and if so where is it located? What is the process for refilling the coolant?
  16. Hi, I need winter tires on my 1999 Porsche 996 Carrera. I found some used 19" (99736215602) ET57 8x19 front with 225/40r19 and (99736216202) ET51 11x19 rear with 255/35r19. My question is, will these fit my carrera? The owner have had it on a 996 Turbo (not 997 Turbo). Thanks :notworthy:
  17. Hi everyone, Recently been dealing with a 996 TT with excessive smoke... After some turbo rebuilding the smoke from the tailpipe stopped but they started leaking externally. After some research turbos are not necessarily oil tight..meaning that the oil is not getting evacuated from the turbo reservoirs. More time and research led me to checking the turbo scavenge pump (yes they have 3, 1 on each head and one in the center for the turbos) Attached are the photos of some carnage, basically the drive off the intermediate shaft is stripped. I'm hoping one of the gurus will chime in on the extent of the required repairs now... Is the drive piece replaceable or am i splitting the case? Cheers, D.
  18. Spent the afternoon under the front N/S corner of the 04 Cayenne Turbo, looking to replace the seals on the boost hoses and dump valve. When unclipping the bottom turbo hose from the intercooler, I was stunned to find at least 1/4 litre of oil pour out of the hose onto the floor. In all my years, I've never taken a hose off a turbo and seen that much oil. Has anyone else on here taken the hose off the bottom of the intercooler on the N/S (Drivers side US & Europe, Passenger side UK) and experenced it full of oil? I'm worried about the state of the oil seals on the N/S turbo. Is this a feature of the Cayenne's turbo design?? I replaced all of the seals on the hoses at the O/S earlier in the year, and the bottom hose was dry. This N/S hose is shaped differently, but should it collect 1/4 litre of oil like this? Thanks Chris
  19. Hi Everyone, I have been lurking in the forum for a while and soaking up all I can gather about the Cayenne. Thanks for making this forum an amazing repository for all things Porsche. I have been in the market for a truck for sometime now. My truck of choice was the full sized Range Rover Supercharged..however, I took my wife for a test drive of the Cayenne and she was completely blown away. I was sold as well on the on road behavior. Things that are important to me 1. Character and Driveability 2. Reliability 3. Gas mileage to some extent (dont want a 11mpg truck but 16 - 20 ish is great..my current car gives me 16 MPG instead of the claimed 22 mpg and I am ok with that) I like speed but I am not a speed demon. I value nuanced driving, handling and a command seating position the most. I aim to own this car for the next 10 years if it will go that far. Also, I dont want to spend crazy money on buying a new Cayenne..cant afford it. So now, with that being said, my quest has led me to 2 Cayennes and would love to get your help deciding which would be a good choice to go for.. 1. 2009 Cayenne Turbo Key points: - 57.7K miles, Porsche CPO, 1 Owner, feels tight as a drum, price 46K..nicely specced out but doesn't have PDCC - When I drove it I experienced some turbo lag upto 3K then it took off. The handling was taut and I liked it a lot - I wasnt too happy about the turbo lag..I dont know how the naturally aspirated engine behaves but the turbo lag was a bit of a let down - Since this is my first Porsche, I havent interacted with the local dealer beyond the sales call, but he seemed okay, knew his stuff and the service manager was very knowledgeable - Once concern I have with a turbo charged vehicle is the added complexity of the turbo and how that impacts reliability. Also, I live in a very cold climate so will the turbo under perform in colder months?? 2. 2011 Cayenne S Key Points: - 34K miles, CARMAX car, 1 Owner, price 55.5K - Nicely specced out, obviously better interiors but not full leather like the Turbo - I haven't driven it so I dont know how good it is. I can get it shipped to my location by CARMAX but I want to understand if its even worth the effort - I am not comfortable buying such an expensive car w/o any warranty so I will need to factor in $4K for a Carmax warranty. I am not sure if the Carmax warranty is good enough..I will need to research that further. But at ~$60K thats the upper reaches of my budget Some other factors to account for: - I dont intend to take the truck/ car for hardcore offroading but will be doing snow passes, fireroads and trails definitely..I dont know if the presence or absence of the dual range transfer box changes that (07-10 vs 11+ Gen 2 Cayennes) - I am mechanically inclined and do wrench a bit (do oil changes and simple stuff on my motorcycle) but I honestly dont think I will have the time to do any of that for the Cayenne - Finally, this will be my primary daily driver vehicle. Thanks in advance for all the replies. Thanks, PK.
  20. I have a 2005 cayenne turbo. When I accelorate it seems as if the car builds itself up then takes off, but when the RPM passes 6 and enters into the red, the truck seems to jump or hesitate, almost like I'm slamming on the brakes then it takes off again. The engine light comes and goes and every time it throws p0016 which is camshaft and crankshaft position sensors. I had it checked out and was told there is no way to diagnose it as the timing belt without taking out the turbos out and blah blah blah. So, I am left to replace both sensors and go from there. What does this sound like? Help please I am a newbie!
  21. I see a lot of bearings for sale on eBay for $71-90 but I regret I can find no actual procedure on the forum for hoe to actually replace the bearing. I see how to remove the shaft which is simple... Just need to know how to separate the shaft at the pivot point... Thanks!
  22. Didn't find any TT or awd specific posts regarding this, so I was hoping I could get a quick walk through of the front control arm replacement procedure. My car is an '01 996TT. I found this, and the control arm and track arm look very similar in the picture so I am guessing it is closely resembling ours? ( http://kevingosselin.blogspot.com/2009/08/boxster-control-arm-replacment-in-total.html ) But that link doesn't deal with any front half shafts. Do I need to remove the hub assembly to do my front control arms? Should I have new CV boots/clamps standing by? Thanks for any pointers! -Connor
  23. Sorry for the cross post but I could not find this online and think it might be usefull http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=753445&referrerid=14620
  24. Hello, 2002 996 TT. I was wondering if anyone has instructions on how to install the spring + plastic bracket for the gas thank door. I just ordered the parts today so it might be self explanatory but I didn't see where the spring would go for example. Any digrams or pictures would be greatly apprecaited. Thanks in advance.
  25. hi! Does anyone have a wiring diagram for 996 turbo 2001 they are willing to share with me? My right rear foglight dosen't work, I have measured and there is no 12V, I have ground on the brown cable, but no power on the gray cable.. so I want to find the other connection points to figure out why I don't have 12V on the gray cable.. and yes the fuse is ok :) hope someone can help! Kenneth
